So can I get myself ready for a Surf Lifesaver award? Do a timed swim, like for the first time in 38 years or so? I have no fancy stroke or crawl but would like to learn a new skills and help the club get a better ratio of kids v. adult helpers and (assistant) coaches. So here I am.
Getting myself ready for 3 days of training for a next formal SLSGB badge - theSurf Lifesaver award.
Couple of main conditions for this award:
Be an existing member of SLSGB - pfew - hard ...... but managed
Be able to swim 400m in under 9 minutes and 30 seconds
Be able to run 200m in under 1 min
And this evening, I made my first effort at swimming against the clock - and I managed! Even with my lousy breast stroke - now let's speak to Paul and find out if you are actually allowed to even do a breast stroke ;-)
Anyway, if I can do it, there must be at least 20 more (and younger!) parents connected to the club who could do it if they set their mind to it. And imagine: more parents helpers, assistant coaches and coaches and we could maybe run a parallel group and give more kids the chance to exercise, stay fit and learn surf lifesaving skills!
Wanna know more? Get in touch with our club and hear how you can help out ...and maybe also experience your first timed swim in 35 years!
P.S. Wanna know all the learning objectives of this badge? Have a look at the SLSGB website here: http://bit.ly/392LlN0
Our headcoach Paul is running a course for this badge on 6-8 March - contact the club for more information via the contacts page or our chat.
