Itchy gills.....

Little could I know that so shortly after my timed swim from the previous post, our club would sort of freeze.

Before the lockdown, we spend some great time with our brilliant head coach Paul in a local swimming pool. It was great fun and good learning. Good (but also a little scary...) to be back in the classroom again as a 'responsible adult', well at least some of us.....

The aim of the training was to get our SLSGB Surf Coach Safety & Rescue ticket. It aims to "establish the necessary skills and knowledge to provide basic rescue response and life support." Of course I was dreaming of getting my body into shape for a role as an extra in the next series of Baywatch but it seemed Paul was afraid for competition so didn't allow us to use any gym facilities at all before and during the course....

Great sense of achievement after those 2 weekends I must say, even though I was disappointed that no scout showed up at the pool. I am sure that is only because the pool was closed off to the public and to scouts.

We still have to do our open water swim as the conditions were 'red flag' on the afternoon of our sea swim that we planned to do near Marazion. Our biggest worry then was passing our timed swim and demonstrating our open water swim competency.

But ever since .....in some respects, we seem to be in a different world....Corona entered our lives. And so our club went into hibernation.

But times are luckily a'changing a little. There may be some opportunities coming now that government guidance on COVID-19 restrictions is carefully changing. Following months of no-activity at all, we are now meeting almost weekly on Zoom to see if there is any way that we can open the club again in some way. This may include a trial with coaches only to do a risk assessment and test new procedures on our lovely beach in the coming weeks, as soon as weather permits.

So at the moment, we're Zoom club. I am waiting for the moment that some smug programmer comes up with a way to combine a Wii swim game with a Zoom pool. A virtual swimming pool, easily 40 lanes wide and all our tanned and trimmed bodies standing by the side, getting ready to perform a tube rescue.

But trust me, there is waaaaay too much energy in our club to stay a Zoom club so we'll be back as soon as we reasonably can. We all have itchy gills......
